Sur Offering

The Tibetan word gsur refers to the scent of roasted flour offered to spirits during this moving and compassionate practice. According to Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche, evening or night is the best time for the sur offering as this is when spirits wander, dakas and dakinis gather, and the bardo beings are most easily able to receive the offerings. Rinpoche strongly emphasizes the importance of this practice in helping centers clear obstacles and create merit by making charity to the sentient beings of the six realms. According to Rinpoche, this practice is very beneficial in general for sentient beings and in particular for pretas. The practice also helps us to generate powerful merit while cultivating compassion and generosity for suffering sentient beings.
