(Somatic Movements for Meditators or anyone else who wants to sit comfortably on the floor or in a chair!)

Are you one of those people who can’t sit comfortably for long in any position when you meditate? Have you found it hard to relax and quiet your mind as a result? If yes, you’re not alone! We hear the instruction to lengthen our spine and sit tall, but trying to maintain this position is a challenge for many. Our underlying postural habits may be part of the problem, along with tension/tightness in the muscles of our hips and thighs. And if you have knee pain and stiffness in your feet and ankles, it’s no wonder that lotus, half lotus, cross-legged, and kneeling positions seem impossible to attain.

If you’d like to learn ways to change your postural habits and release chronic muscular contractions that may be contributing to your discomfort, join Lisa Sack, Certified Hanna Somatic Educator® and Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) for an exploration of gentle movements to free your spine, facilitate range of motion, and create more ease when you sit.

What you’ll learn:

  • Basic anatomy of the pelvis and spine
  • Techniques to establish and maintain the natural curves of your spine
  • How to work with your breath to support your spinal curves and the position of your head
  • Somatic movements to free your pelvis and the musculature of your hips and thighs
  • Practical techniques to adapt your seated position for greater comfort

Shantideva Center and Yogis & Yoginis have shared the same space since 2018. The mission of Yogis & Yoginis is to create a safe and inspiring environment for people to grow in their physical and spiritual practice. Lisa Sack is one of the teachers at Y&Y and teaches somatic movement. For more information about Yogis & Yoginis, please visit: https://yogisandyoginis.com

About Lisa Sack

Lisa Sack, C-HSE, C-IAYT, ERYT-500, C-AHC, is a certified Viniyoga® therapist, Āyurvedic Health Counselor, and Hanna Somatic Educator®. She practices yoga and yoga therapy in the tradition of TKV Desikachar who emphasized an individualized, breath-centered approach to āsana practice as a powerful method for preparing body and mind for prāṇāyāma and meditation. For Lisa, Hanna Somatic Education is a moving meditation– a deeply yogic practice that can help you become more embodied, hone your moment-to-moment awareness, and quiet your mind. She is passionate about bringing this lesser-known somatic tradition to the world. Based on students’ observations and her own practice, Lisa has found that slow, small, focused movements connected to our breath can yield rich perceptions, create new pathways for consciousness, and lead to personal transformation.
